Elephant is one of the largest animals which live on the land. It is herbivorous. It is the only animal which has a long trunk which it uses as a hand. Elephants are trained to entertain and serve man. The Hindus worship it as the Elephant God Ganesha the remover of all obstacles has the head of the baby elephant. It loves to eat bananas , grass etc. They area used in circus to entertain people and they play cricket and football too. It helps man by carrying logs of wood and sugar cane. It is believed the dung of the elephant is warm and a person who stamps the dung immediately after it passes is protected from Elephantiasis. Off late people use the hair from the elephants tail as it is very good for health and they use it in the form of bracelets or finger rings. It has two tusks which are very very expensive and called Ivory. It drives any flies with its fan like ears. There are two species of elephants namely the African elephants and the Asian elephants. The African elephant is large and more difficult to tame. They are almost gray in co lour. Usually it gives birth to a single calf. In India the temples have elephants which are decorated on occasions and are in front of the temple and on receiving instructions from the mahout the man in charge of the elephant takes money or eatables from devotees and common man and places its trunk on the head of the giver which is considered as a blessing. The Mysore Palace has many beautiful elephants beautiful decorated and taken in procession during the festival Dassera. At times we can see them with their mahouts on the streets.
